Troy Parrott at Real Betis: How will Ireland’s hero fit into Pellegrini’s plans?

Real Betis have now completed the signing of Troy Parrott from AZ Alkmaar, a high profile move for both player and club.

Betis have beaten interest from West Ham to secure the signature of the Irishman, handing Manuel Pellegrini another option in a position that has caused his side problems in recent seasons.

The move will also attract interest far beyond Betis. More than 90 years after Patrick ‘Don Patricio’ O’Connell led Los Verdiblancos to the only league title in their history, another Irishman is preparing to make his mark in Triana.

A fee which could rise to €20 million, including add ons, represents a significant investment from Betis.

With the club returning to the Champions League for the first time in over 20 years, Parrott arrives at a moment when expectations are higher than ever.

For years, Betis have searched for a striker capable of consistently leading their attack. The question now is whether Parrott can become the number nine they have been searching for.

Following in Don Patricio's footsteps

Real Betis have a long standing Irish connection, with their greatest ever triumph coming under Patrick ‘Don Patricio’ O’Connell in 1935.

O’Connell remains the only manager to lead Betis to a league title, achieving the feat in 1935, a triumph the club has not repeated since.Don Patricio joined in 1932 to much negativity, with Betis having just achieved promotion to the top flight under Emilio Sampere.

However, it did not take long for the former Manchester United player to earn the trust of Los Beticos.Betis continued their rise under the Dublin born coach, eventually establishing themselves as one of the strongest sides in Spain.

In May 1935, they travelled to Racing Santander and secured the victory needed to win the only league title in the club’s history.

O’Connell remains one of the greatest figures in Betis history, with a bust of the Irishman standing inside the Benito Villamarín.

His legacy extends far beyond Seville, too, with another bust in the Camp Nou museum, reflecting his place as one of the most significant Irish figures in Spanish football.

More than 90 years later, Parrott arrives in Seville with the opportunity to begin writing his own chapter in the club’s Irish history.

Why did Betis need Troy Parrott?

Betis have been one of LaLiga’s most consistent sides under Pellegrini, but one problem has persisted over the last few seasons: the number nine position.

The last player to score 15 or more LaLiga goals in a season for Betis was Borja Iglesias in 2022-23. Since then, the club have tried different solutions without finding a striker capable of consistently making the position his own.

Pellegrini has continued to trust Cucho Hernández, but a return to the Champions League means Betis can no longer rely on one striker to carry the burden alone.

Another profile was necessary to give Pellegrini a different solution. The departures of Cédric Bakambu and Chimy Ávila left Betis with fewer options, but this was not simply about replacing numbers.

The club needed to find a striker capable of raising the level of the position. Nelson Deossa was even trialled as a false nine in pre-season, and the opening victory over Real Sociedad showed that while Betis are a team capable of creating a lot of openings, they need another presence upfront capable of providing the finishing touch.

Enter Parrott.

With 31 goals and 12 assists in 48 games across all competitions for AZ last season, he arrives as a 24-year-old coming off the back of the best campaign of his career.

And those numbers do not even include the five goals he scored in two games for the Republic of Ireland, helping put his country within touching distance of World Cup qualification.

Parrott’s next move needed to take him to a club where he could play regularly, continue his development and become an important figure rather than simply another attacking option.

Betis offered exactly that, while also presenting him with the opportunity to solve a goalscoring problem that has frustrated the club for years. Now, Parrott has arrived with the opportunity to become the striker who finally turns Betis’ creativity into consistent goals.

How will Parrott fit in at Betis?

Under Pellegrini, Betis often begin in a 4-2-3-1, but the system gives their most technically gifted players plenty of freedom in the final third.

They want to control possession, but Pellegrini does not demand rigid positional play from his attacking players. Instead, Betis look to move the ball into the final third and allow creators such as Isco and Pablo Fornals to find spaces and combine.

That freedom has helped players such as Antony and Abde Ezzalzouli thrive in wide areas, but Betis have still struggled at times to turn their territorial dominance into clear chances against low blocks.

That is where Parrott could make a difference.

He offers a different profile to Cucho, providing Pellegrini with a more natural focal point rather than a direct replacement.

His ability to occupy centre-backs, link play and make movements into the box could give Betis’ fluid attack a clearer reference point. Betis often look to create overloads on one side of the pitch, and Parrott’s movement can help create space for the players around him.

If Parrott drops towards the ball, a centre back has to decide whether to follow him or hold his position. Follow him, and space can open behind. Stay put, and Parrott can receive and combine with the creative players around him.

The prospect of Isco playing behind Parrott is particularly intriguing. One of Spain’s most gifted creators will now have a striker capable of giving his passing a more consistent target, while Parrott will have arguably the best creative support of his career around him.

For Betis, the hope is that the Irishman can provide the final piece to an attack that already has plenty of creativity.

For Parrott, the opportunity is just as significant: he now has the chance to establish himself as the number nine Betis have been searching for and become a key figure at one of Spain’s biggest clubs.
