Why are LaLiga kick-off times in August so bizarre?

The new LaLiga season is almost upon us, but the current fixture schedule is a difficult one to make sense of.
Just 12 of the 20 teams will feature in the first gameweek, with Deportivo Alaves and Rayo Vallecano playing twice before the likes of Real Betis and Barcelona appear even once.
This imbalance is set to continue throughout August, and as it stands, there appears to be no regular routine for these games.
While other domestic leagues may be restricted to weekend kick-offs in the early stages of the season, LaLiga is the opposite. Once it all kicks off on August 15th, there is just one day without any matches until September 1st.
