Celta Vigo vs Osasuna postponed: Why Osasuna are right to criticise LaLiga

There was already surprise at LaLiga's fixture scheduling, with just five games set to be played on the opening weekend, and this has now come under further scrutiny.

Now, just 12 of the 20 teams in the league will play on matchweek 1, with several teams taking advantage of delayed starts as players continue to return from the World Cup.

Osasuna are far from happy with the way events have panned out over the postponement, and have now hit out at LaLiga in an official statement.

In a statement on their club website, Osasuna expressed their "absolute disagreement" with the new date set for the fixture.

The rearranged game is set to take place on August 27th, just three days after they host Levante at El Sadar.

This scheduling puts Osasuna at a disadvantage, despite the postponement coming through no fault of theirs, and they have now slammed LaLiga and RFEF.

"That a competition like LaLiga Española decides on a Thursday, three days before a match, a postponement follows the line of the usual last-minute movements in the calendar to which unfortunately we have become accustomed by the lack of foresight and seriousness," they stated.

They then fired a parting shot, ending the statement with LaLiga's brand slogan: "It's not football, it's LaLiga."

The farce surrounding Celta vs Osasuna may come as a surprise to those unfamiliar with LaLiga, but as Osasuna have stated, this is not a brand new problem.

LaLiga have routinely moved games at a moment's notice, constantly inconveniencing fans and disrupting the preparations of the teams competing in the league.It is a problem which must simply change going forward.

In general, fixture dates are arranged at shorter notice than in other leagues, meaning that long-distance travel for fans is harder to plan in advance.

Stadium issues which result in postponements are often unavoidable, but there are better solutions than the hastily made rearrangements often made by LaLiga.

Osasuna have stated that they will refund every travelling fan, but this will not cover the cost of accommodation or travel that supporters will now lose out on.

There is even an argument to be made that LaLiga should be starting a week later, in line with the Premier League, in a schedule which will allow Spain's victorious World Cup winners to properly return to league football.
